WHAT IS TAEKWONDO?
TAE = kick
KWON = punch
DO = the way of
TAEKWONDO is a Korean unarmed martial art. It is not only kicking and punching, but also a way of thinking and living. The main goal of Taekwondo is to achieve total mind and body control through training.
There are 5 Principles or Tenats which Taekwondo lives by. We talk about these in the Dojang and apply them to our daily lives.
COURTESY: To be thoughtful and considerate of others. Taekwondo students can show courtesy by bowing as they enter the Dojang, greeting your instructor and fellow students with a hand shake and bow.
Listening quietly when your instructor talks and thanking your instructor at the end of the class.
INTEGRITY: To be honest, good and do the right thing. Do what you say you are going to do. Taekwondo practitioners should live by a code of moral values and principles.
PERSEVERANCE: To never give up in the pursuit of ones goals. Students should welcome challenges, because challenges cause us to grow and improve. You can achieve anything you want if you keep on trying with determination.
SELF-CONTROL: One of the vital Taekwondo principles. When you train in Taekwondo you learn incredibly powerful techniques, but you must learn to control yourself and use your Taekwondo knowledge to defend yourself if needed. To have control of your body and mind will help you think more clearly about what you do and say.
INDOMITABLE SPIRIT: The warrior spirit in you which keeps you going! Indomitable means, unbreakable, unconquerable. To put it simply, not to be easily discouraged and to have everlasting positive courage, no matter what odds you are up against, and to always give all of your effort in whatever you do.
